Want a cheap vacation? Stay home! Hotel bills, gas and meals on the road can be the most expensive part of the annual family vacation. There’s so much FREE and CHEAP stuff to do in the Pikes Peak Region, there’s no need to go elsewhere to have fun. You can hike in Garden of the Gods, take a tour at the Air Force Academy, visit the Olympic Training Center or Pioneers Museum. All FREE. And take advantage of local parks, with great playgrounds and some water features for cooling off– at the Uncle Wilbur Fountain in Acacia Park or the Julie Penrose Fountain wading pool at America the Beautiful Park. Don’t forget local swimming pools, nature centers and libraries. If you haven’t visited the new Library 21c, do so! It opens June 21 and has a huge children’s area and a separate teen space. Do a backyard campout with the kids or take them to one of the area’s fine state parks — Cheyenne Mountain, Mueller or Lake Pueblo — for a couple of days. Take in a dollar movie. To make it feel more like vacation, have a few meals out. After all, you’re saving on day care and gas, so you can afford it! Watch Pikes Peak on the cheap for more ideas all summer.
