It’s a city park that vies with national parks for stunning beauty. We’re talking, of course, about the Garden of the Gods. The Colorado Springs city park not only has acres of gorgeous and sometimes whimsical red sandstone formations, but also plenty of acreage for hiking and mountain biking. Take a ranger-guided tour if you like, or check out other park programs. Look for wildlife, too — including bears and mountain lions. The rocks are inviting, but climb at your own risk. Rescues happen more often than you might think and they’re expensive! But everything else is FREE. Also be sure to check out the newly renovated Visitors’ Center on 30th Street across from the park entrance — lots of hands-on stuff for kids and a terrific gift shop. The park is open dawn to dusk.
