Ever wanted to learn about camping, or get tips on hiking, or outdoors skills like fly-fishing, archery, shooting rifles, geocaching and outdoor adventures? Then get yourself to Mueller State Park on Saturday, June 25, for its free Outdoor Skills Day.
The annual day of outdoor fun starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. at the park in Teller County.
Not only do guests get to sample a variety of outdoor events, they learn from the best.
“The best part is learning from the experts,” Groat said, noting that partner organizations will be there including professional fishing guides, hunter education instructors, spelunkers, firefighters and Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff.
New this year will be the Mobile Earth and Space Observatory. Learn all about the sun, stars and our galaxy. Another amazing exhibit is Cave-Sim, a man-made cave on wheels, so folks can experience what it’s like to climb in a cave as well as learn cave safety and science.
A variety of outdoor activities for the whole family will be offered designed to test your skills or learn a new hobby including:
- Target shooting with .22-caliber rifles and shotguns
- Archery
- Fishing
- Fly Fishing
- Geocaching
- Caving
- S’mores Station
- Wildlife information
- Camping
Stations will be designed to teach all ages the basic skills in each activity. Pick and choose the stations that interest you. Or try them all. The event is open to all ages, but a parent or adult must accompany children the entire time.
Families should bring a picnic lunch and spend the whole day. There will not be any food available to purchase at the event.
This event is made possible by the following partners: Alpine Firearms, the Adventure Company, Bass Pro Shops, Catamount Institute, City Market, Divide Fire Protection District, Friends of Mueller State Park, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, South Platte Fly Shop, Teller Senior Coalition and Cripple Creek Parks and Recreation.
Horseback Riders Note: Horses will not be allowed to ride or park at the trailheads in the park during Outdoor Skills Day. However, equestrians are invited to visit neighboring Dome Rock State Wildlife Area and ride from there.
Mueller events are free for any guest with a $9 day pass or $80 annual vehicle park pass.
