If you liked the recipe for homemade laundry detergent from Living on the Cheap, now try this recipe for DIY dishwasher detergent. It costs about 1/3 what commercial dishwasher soap costs and it’s environmentally friendly. Mix 1 cup Borax with 1 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup kosher salt. You’ll also need a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid. Mix the powdered ingredients in a resealable container by shaking. Add the Dawn when you are putting in the powdered dishwasher detergent to run a load. That’s an important step to remember. Use 1 tablespoon of the powdered detergent, plus the few drops of dishwashing liquid, and voila! The dishes and plates came out clean. If yours come out a bit cloudy, add Lemi Shine, a citrus-based dishwasher additive that cuts hard-water film, to the pre-wash cycle. It’s available at Target and WalMart.
