Thinking of adding a pet to your household? It doesn’t come cheap. But there are some ways you can save money and still have furry friend in your family. The Humane Society of the United States lists organizations by state that offer assistance to pet owners for veterinary care, pet food and supplies. Low-cost spay/neuter services are often available through your local Humane Society or shelter. Also, the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) maintains a database of such services by state. Adoption fees at humane societies and shelters aren’t peanuts. But they’re a fraction of what a dog would cost from a breeder. Still, you can do a little bargain hunting by asking when your local shelter’s adoption specials are coming up. check with the Humane Society of the PIikes Peak Region to see when they’ve having specials.
