Coyotes, Hummers Star in Preschool Programs at the Garden

If you’re looking for a FREE and fun activity for your preschooler, look no farther than the city’s landmark park, Garden of the Gods.  Upcoming programs, held at 10 a.m. in the Red Rocks Room of the Visitors’ Center on Fridays, include: Feb. 24, a look at the coyote, with a story time followed by arts and crafts. On Friday, March 2,  the topic will be hummingbirds, also with  a story time followed by arts and crafts.  Even though it’s free, space is limited, so call for reservations at 219-0108.

ID Birds of Prey at Cheyenne Mt. State Park — Take the Kids

“Identifying Birds of Prey” will be a program offered on selected Sunday afternoons this winter at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.  Owls will be studied on Feb. 26,  1 p.m. – 2 p.m.;  Eagles and Others are the topic on March 4, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.; Buteos (medium sized, wide ranging raptors) get attention on March 11, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.; and Falcons and Accipters (birds of prey) are examined March 18, 12:30 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.  Photographer and expert birder Debbie Barnes will share her photos and birding skills to help improve your ability to identify soaring and perching birds of prey. Learn to use “field marks” and behaviors to distinguish between the many species of raptors that live in and around the Pikes Peak Region. Recommended for adults and children 12 years and older. This free program will be conducted at the park visitor center and no parks pass is required. Programs are FREE, but every vehicle entering the park pays a $7 per car fee, unless you have an annual parks pass. Pick Up Back Issues of Magazines for Only a Dime at Library

Looking for back issues of your favorite magazines? East Library only has room for a few years’ worth of each title in its circulating collection, so older issues are pulled and sold on the fourth Thursday of every month outside of the Friends Bookstore at East Library. The next sale takes place on Feb. 23. The price is only 10 cents per issue (or 11 magazines for a dollar). Whatever doesn’t sell is recycled the following day. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District.

Kids, hear All About Abe Lincoln at Children’s History Hour at Museum

Stop by the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum on the last Saturday of each month for Children’s History Hour. Staff will read a children’s book, offer a family-friendly tour, and create fun crafts. Some events will feature additional activities and even special visitors. This month’s feature, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, is “Abe Lincoln’s Hat,”  by Martha Brenner and a tour of the current exhibit, Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, A Man for All Times exhibit. It’s all FREE, and a fun and educational family-friendly event.

Broken Spoke Among Artists Performing at Studio Bee — Free

This month’s Showcase at Studio Bee features four local bands: The Broken Spoke, BJ Estares and Route 61 and 2 Hour Delay. This FREE concert at Studio Bee in the Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., presents local artists performing original music. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.   These concerts are made possible due to a collaboration between KRCC, COPPeR, the Gazette, the Independent, Independent Records, Bristol Brewing Company and the Pikes Peak Center.

Enjoy Extended Hours on Free Days at the Fine Arts Center

See fine art for FREE! And now, enjoy extended hours on FREE days , the third Tuesday of every month, at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.  Not only is admission FREE during the new extended hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, but anyone who attends can get a free guided tour of the gorgeous facility at 10 and 11 a.m. or at 1 and 6 p.m.

There’ll be prize giveaways (value up to $50) – maybe for an art class at Bemis School of Art, theater tickets or museum passes. Any way you look at it, you’ll be back! Click here for more events at the Fine Arts Center.
